Man charged with allegedly shooting at cars on NSW motorway

A man has been charged over alleged shootings on the New South Wales Mid North Coast that sparked a major police operation yesterday.

The 26-year-old will front court today in Kempsey charged with with three counts of discharge firearm intend cause grievous bodily harm and other firearm offences.

The man and another 32-year-old man were arrested yesterday near a riverbank behind a Big W in Kempsey, with heavily-armed police taking the pair into custody after an hours-long manhunt.

The series of events began early yesterday morning when several shots were allegedly fired from a black Mercedes dual cab ute on the M1 at Coopernook, Kundabung, Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie and the Telegraph Point area.

 

One of the bullets grazed a man who was driving in Coopernook.

He was assessed by paramedics and had suffered minor injuries. He has since been discharged from hospital.

Shots were also allegedly fired in the direction of a police vehicle on the M1 near Fernbank Creek Road, Port Macquarie. No officers were injured.

The ute was found abandoned at Wayne Richards Park at Port Macquarie.

It was seized by police and will undergo forensic examination.

Investigations are continuing.
