Driver charged after pursuit and crash

A teen driver has been charged after allegedly returning a positive breath result reading of 0.103 following a pursuit and subsequent car crash near Newcastle this morning.

Police say a 17-year-old boy driving a white Kia Cerato failed to stop for patrolling officers at New Lambton just before 8am, before a chase ensued until the vehicle crashed into the rear of a hatchback at Charlestown.

The female driver of the hatchback, a 56-year-old woman, was taken to hospital in a stable condition for the treatment of fractured ribs, vertebrae and shoulder blades.

Police will allege in court that the vehicle was stolen from a Lisarow address earlier this morning.

The teen was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, drive unlicensed, and drive with middle range PCA.

He was refused bail to appear before a children’s court tomorrow.
