The 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea was commemorated at a service in Newcastle yesterday.
The pivotal engagement between US and Australian forces against a Japanese invasion fleet during World War Two has been described as the biggest and most important naval battle ever fought off the nation’s coast.
Both sides suffered significant losses, but the action halted the Japanese advance.
