COUNCILS APPLY FOR RATE HIKE APPROVAL

Thirty-six councils from across the state are planning to apply to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal for permission to hike up rates in 2014-15.
Of the 36, the New England north west accounts for six of the councils seeking approval, with Armidale Dumaresq, Glen Innes Severn, the Liverpool Plains, Guyra, Gwydir and Tenterfield notifying IPART of their intention to apply.
If approved, the special variations will allow the local government bodies to increase general rates above the set rate peg of two-point-three per cent.
