A controversial idea to tax surfers every time they get in the water has been floated on the Gold Coast, as a way to reduce surf rage incidents at overcrowded breaks.
There’s also a suggestion to slap fines on those who break surf etiquette.
Surfers have criticised the ideas – as has Mayor Tom Tate.
“Riduculous! Surfing should be free for everyone, Mother Nature intended it that way.”
“Surf tax is dead in the water.”
The Mayor says other strategies to police surf rage and overcrowding are being discussed.
