COUNCILS MOVES TO INCREASE RATES BY 47 PER CENT
The average Newcastle resident will pay an extra $100 per year, if a special rate variation is approved by IPART.
Newcastle Councillors voted in favour of an 8 per cent increase each year for five years during last night’s meeting, which was the first led by new Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes.
The Lord Mayor used her casting vote to push the rate rise through.
The move would see rates lift by almost 47 per cent in total, with the revenue to be spent on revitalisation projects.
That includes maintaining services at Beresfield Pool and putting Newcastle Art Gallery’s redevelopment back on the agenda.
We’ll bring you the full wrap from last night’s council meeting tonight at 6.
