EASTER ROAD OPERATIONS CATCH OUT LEARNER AND PROVISIONAL DRIVERS
A number of Learner and Provisional drivers have been caught speeding or drink driving as Operation Tortoise nears its conclusion for the Easter Weekend.
At about 9:45 past night, a 21-year-old male L-plater was allegedly recorded driving at 142km/h and not displaying L-plates on the Pacific Highway at Valla, south of Coffs Harbour. He had his licence suspended and was issued a speeding infringement notice.
In a similar incident, a 19-year-old woman whose Learners licence was suspended was allegedly detected driving at 143km/h on the Newcastle Link Road, Wallsend, just before midnight yesterday. The driver was charged with a number of driving offences and will face local court later in April.
Meanwhile also yesterday, a 20-year-old woman with a P2 licence was allegedly detected speeding at 135km/h in a 100km/h zone, about 9am. She returned a positive breath test when stopped, and was charged with low-range drink-driving and issued an infringement notice for speeding.
Over 6000 speeding infringement notices and 199 drink driving charges have been issued over the duration of Operation Tortoise, which ends at 11.59pm tonight.
