CHOPPER WRECKAGE FOUND OFF PORT STEPHENS

The debris from a helicopter which crashed off Port Stephens almost three weeks ago has now been found.

Late yesterday afternoon, police divers were able to locate and retrieve some debris from the aircraft and human remains, about 30 metres below the surface.

The aircraft faded off the radar at around 6.30pm on Friday, September 6 with five people on board – sparking a massive search operation.

The Department of Defence provided support through a Royal Australian Navy Coastal Minehunter vessel, HMAS Huon, which provided underwater search and reconnaissance assistance to find and identify the debris.

Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
