KEMPSEY MAN ACCUSED OF $25,000 BUSHFIRE RELIEF FRAUD

A man will face court today charged over allegedly lodging nearly $25,000 worth of fraudulent claims for bushfire disaster relief on the mid north coast.

In February, detectives launched an investigation into alleged fraudulent claims for bushfire disaster compensation by a 23-year-old man.

On Sunday afternoon, police were called to a home in Kempsey following an unrelated domestic incident.

Officers arrested the man there, alleging he lodged several bushfire disaster relief claims through both government and not-for-profit agencies, fraudulently obtaining $24,500.

He was charged with 13 offences, including five counts of dishonestly obtaining property by deception and four counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

He was refused bail to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court today.

Investigation are ongoing.
