NOTORIOUS “WASHPOOL” FLOOD ZONE ALL SET FOR $7.1-MILLION REVAMP
A notorious flood-zone on the Gwydir Highway is set for a multi-million dollar rebuild.
The highway’s well-known “washpool” section, east of Moree, will be raised and rebuilt to improve the area’s capacity to deal with flooding.
The upgrades will include the construction of a bridge and the installation of large drains.
It’s hoped the project will also keep freight moving during periods of heavy rainfall.
“A couple of kilometres section of the Gwydir Highway will literally be lifted and there’ll be culverts put under the highway to make sure that the floodwaters go underneath the highway, rather than over the top.”
Work on the $7.1-million project will kick off next week and is expected to take around two years.
