TWO CHARGED OVER CORRECTIONAL OFFICER ASSAULT

Two men have been charged over a serious assault at a correctional centre on the Mid North Coast last year.

On December 19, 2020, police allege two inmates, aged 20 and 23, armed themselves with makeshift weapons and held two Correctional Officers against their will at a facility near Kempsey.

One officer managed to escape, and called for additional resources.

Police further allege the remaining officer was assaulted and stabbed a number of times over six hours.

The correctional officer was treated at the scene, before being taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

He received further treatment for a fractured eye socket, a punctured left lung, multiple lacerations, bruising and significant chemical burns.

Police were notified, and started an investigation into the incident.

After extensive inquiries, detectives attended Goulburn Police Station yesterday, and arrested the two men.

Both were charged with seven offences, and were remanded in custody.

They’ll appear at Kempsey Local Court via video link, on February 8.
