Belmont residents oppose $25 million, 9-storey development

Belmont residents have pleaded their case to Lake Macquarie Council about a proposed $25-million, nine-storey development.

A decision on the project is expected within days – they say it’s too big and encroaches on their privacy.

The developer has been contacted for comment. Read the full statement from a Lake Macquarie Council spokesperson below:

“Belmont is an economic centre where increased development and change is expected to cater for the growing population in and around the commercial centre.

The proposal is a realisation of Council’s strategic intent for Belmont and consistent with the Belmont Town Centre Area Plan, which identifies higher density mixed use and residential development between the Pacific Highway and the lake as part of the desired future character of the centre.

The development proposes construction of a nine-storey building with three levels of basement parking, commercial space on the ground floor, 32 residential apartments and a roof top communal area. The overall height of the development is 34.49m, an increase on the mapped height of buildings for the site of 12.49m or 64 per cent.

A merit-based assessment in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 considered the development appropriate for the zone and consistent with the emerging built form characteristics of Belmont.

A Council site inspection is scheduled for 5pm Thursday 8 December 2022. The development is currently under consideration by Council.”
