This is a bit of an inaccurate reflection of the forum. We agreed that live export must be phased out and that we need to start looking to other markets, increasing a chilled and frozen meat export industry and supporting our farmers. The concerns were that farmers are not left without any income or support throughout the transition and it was a unanimous call amongst farmers, meatworkers, vegans, vegetarians, animal activists and others- that the time has come to move on from discussing whether live export should or should not be phased out and to start focusing on solutions and remedies. Pity NBN missed the point because this is an unprecedented event in animal welfare and heralds a new era of change and cooperation in the meat industry. I hope this message comes out soon as it is exciting for Australias economic prospects, and importantly, for the future of decisions that effect the wellbeing of animals. We have nowhere to go but up.
Hi Anna,
Thanks for your feedback. The farmers we interviewed had their own unique concerns about the industry which weren’t related to the frozen export debate.
You might be interested in this story we did last month which addressed calls to support the frozen export industry.
