The Westpac Rescue helicopter carried out a challenging medical retrieval off the coast of Foster this afternoon.
A crewman on board a bulk carrier, 35 kilometres offshore, had suffered serious facial injuries in a machinery accident.
Paramedics were winched down to the vessel, with thunderstorms closing in.
A 41-year-old man was flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital.
