Top trainer Paul Perry won’t press ahead with Newport’s planned Melbourne Cup campaign.
Perry says it appears the gelding hasn’t come up after disappointing performances in the Newcastle Cup and last Saturday’s Group-1 Metropolitan Handicap.
But the grey won’t be retired, just given a lengthy spell.
Newport, which has won $1.25-million, finished 10th in the past two Melbourne Cups.
