COUNCIL TO USE DETAINEES FOR ODD-JOBS

Detainees at the Acmena Juvenile Justice Centre in Grafton, could soon be used to help clean up local facilities around the Clarence Valley.
Council is currently in negotiations with the Department of Juvenile Justice about using detainees to perform maintenance jobs like mowing, and gardening on council-owned property.
Mayor Richie Williamson says it’s a positive move that’ll allow the youths to gain ownership of community facilities.
A department spokesperson says only low-risk detainees would be involved and they’d be supervised.
The plan will be come before council at a meeting in Maclean tomorrow.
