Motorists on the Northern Rivers are being put on notice ahead of the long weekend.
Police will be stepping up patrols across the region during Operation Stay Alert, and will focus on known crash hot-spots like the Summerland Way and Pacific Highway.
There have already been 16 fatalities across the Tweed Byron and Richmond commands this year, which is seven more than last year.
“We just want people to be mindful of the basics again, go back to the years when we first got our licence, think about our awareness back then”
Double demerits will be in force from midnight tonight until Monday.
