The mystery of Doris the Australasian Gannet, found by the Australian Seabird Rescue has been solved.
The bird was found on the beach at Lennox Head tagged with foreign identification bands – launching a full scale fact-finding mission.
After a few phone calls, the centre found out, Doris is quite the long haul traveller.
“This particular Gannet was banded in a spot called ‘Farewell Spit in New Zealand in 1999 so the bands have lasted that long so that’s a great positive outcome for the researchers to start with.”
It’s unusual for an adult Gannet to migrate such a long distance, but it gives researchers hope that Doris may just find her way back home..
