TELSTRA AXES 116 JOBS IN LISMORE

Telstra has announced it will close its call centre in Lismore with the loss of 116 jobs.

The communications giant will also close its customer call centre in Townsville.

The company has blamed a 20 per cent fall in call volumes in the past 12 months for the decision to cut up to 420 jobs nationwide. Telstra says that in the coming years, as more customers switch from using phone services to the internet, further falls were expected.

“In fact 30 per cent of our customers now use online transactions,” Telstra said.
“As a result, we believe we need fewer contact centres in the future.”

Telstra says affected staff will be invited to apply for other roles within the organisation.
