ELECTION DAY IN THE NORTHERN RIVERS

 

Election day is drawing to an close, but campiagners are hopeful of change in the Northern Rivers.

Mayoral candidates are relying on the voters to make the changes needed in the local councils.

Mayoral candidates from across the Northern Rivers are hoping their experience in the community plays a big part in the voters minds this year.

Byron Shire mayoral candidate Sol Ibrahim has lived in the area most of his life and hopes that will help him in the race.

“Yeh so I think after thirty years i’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s going on in the shire.”

If Keith Williams is successful in the Ballina Shire he plans to put his economics degree to good use to help build a stronger economy in the Ballina region.

“I Think one of the major issues for the Ballina Shire is the state of the local economy. So I think a background in economics is certainly going to be useful. We need to get businesses starting up rather than closing down.”

While Sharon Calwallader believes its her experience on Council that will help her win over the electorate.

“I think the eight years i’ve spent on the council set me on good stead for this role.”

Incumbent Mayor of Lismore City Council, Jenny Dowell says she’s running again to continue with the progress she’s already made in the Lismore community.

“But I would like to continue the work that I’ve done keeping a cohesive council that’s moving lismore forward, but with an eye on what kind of future we’re leaving for the next generation. So development that’s sustainable looking at our finances and roads and getting the basics right.”
