CALLS FOR VACCINATION AFTER HENDRA VIRUS DEATH ON NORTH COAST

Horse owners are being urged to vaccinate their animals after a Lismore gelding was euthanised on Thursday, having contracted the Hendra virus
“It would have been avoidable, certainly vaccination is the best way to avoid Hendra, there are other ways of reducing the risk but vaccination remains the primary means of preventing the disease” said vetinarian, Nick Jones.
Other precautions include covering feed and water troughs near trees where bats are known to live.
It’s the second case of Hendra virus on the North Coast this year.
