TWO ARRESTED AFTER 200KM PURSUIT NEAR BALLINA
Two men have appeared in court after a 200km-long pursuit on the far north coast earlier today.
A 37-year-old man had been on the run after allegedly fleeing from a random breath test near Coffs Harbour earlier this month.
Police further allege the man had waved a firearm at police during the pursuit, before evading them when he led into bushland south of Coffs Harbour.
Then just before 1 o’click this morning, police sighted the man in a vehicle at Woodburn, about 35km south of Ballina.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but he allegedly drove off at high speed towards Lismore before continuing onto Alstonville and then Wardell, south of Ballina.
The pursuit came to an end at the South Ballina ferry terminal, when the vehicle was driven into the river.
A search was initiated involving Queensland airwing, PolAir, and local police, and around 2:15am two men were arrested.
The 37-year-old has been charged with a number of offences including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful apprehension, break, enter and steal, and police pursuit.
Another man, aged 24, was charged with resisting an officer in execution of duty, among other charges.
