WORLD FIRST CORAL RESTORATION PROJECT WRAPS UP
After spending months working to restore the Great Barrier Reef using a type of ‘coral I-V-F,’ Lismore Professor Peter Harrison has returned home.
He headed a team of scientists capturing coral sperm and eggs during the mass spawning event off the coast of Cairns earlier this year.
In a world first, the larvae was nursed into microscopic heat-resistant baby corals, before being resettled back onto sections of the reef badly damaged by bleaching.
“There are some other ideas into the future about how we might adapt that technology but for the moment I’m just really happy that we’ve had this first successful trial.”
There are plans to expand the project in 20-19.
