Ballina Shire Council is one step closer to converting the region’s organic waste into electricity.

It’s $8.5 million Biochar Waste-to-Energy project was today given a $4.3 million funding boost from the Federal Government.

The project will eventually divert 29,000 tonnes of organic waste from residential green bins out of landfill and into a new processing plant to be built at the Ballina Waste Management Centre.

“what this will do is take it, heat it, put it under pressure and in doing so generate electricity back in the grid ”

The process also generates a charcoal called Biochar, a sought-after fertiliser .

Council hopes to have the project running by the end of next year.
