LISMORE MAYOR WANTS TO GIFT 35 HECTARES TO TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS

Lismore’s Mayor, Vanessa Ekins, is looking to hand more than 35-hectares of council land back to its traditional custodians.
Councillor Ekins will bring forward a motion to the next council meeting, requesting the land around the old quarry in North Lismore be transferred over to the Widjabul Wia-bal people.
“It’s about recognising traditional custodians by handing back significant sites so it’s a small gesture. It’s land that we’re not using and we won’t be able to access for at least a decade,” she said.
A current value estimate of the land is unknown.
Council will next meet on Tuesday night.
