Search resumes for missing swimmer off Byron Bay
The search for a missing swimmer will resume this morning at Byron Bay on the northern New South Wales coast.
Two people told police they saw a man struggling in the surf about 30 metres offshore of Main Beach at about 5.30pm.
A 22-year-old man tried to help the swimmer but was overwhelmed by the prevailing conditions.
Police, including a police helicopter, began searching for the man but it was called off at about 8.30pm.
Personal items have been found on the beach, but nobody yet has been reported missing.
The search resumed at 7am today.
Marine Rescue boat Brunswick 30 is searching off Byron’s Main Beach while Ballina 30 is focusing around the Tallow Beach area.
Two operators are looking after radio communications from the Cape Byron base.
