BALLINA’S RATE RISE

Residents in the Ballina Shire could be hit with a 5.9 per cent rate rise in the next financial year, after council voted in favour of the increase at this week’s meeting.
The rise would lead to more than $1-million in revenue.
“No body likes to increase rates but also after the weather, people complain about potholes and things like that and really we’re trying to provide infrastructure, we’ve got the new airport opening tomorrow, we’ve got lots things happening and the only way to do them is to have a rate revenue.”
The increase will help council pay back a $60,000 loan for sewerage works.
