A rare sighting off the coast of Lennox Head has gone viral.
Local ultralight pilot Tim Howes says he was on a routine whale-watching flight from Tyagarah on Friday morning, when he spotted two whirlpools.
They were approximately 100-metres apart in the ocean, and according to Mr Howes, lasted more than five minutes.
The North Coast Storm Chasers group says it’s likely the whirlpools were actually rips, intensified by the direction of ocean currents.
But Mr Howes says it was an experience he’ll never forget.
